Historical
A close paraphrasing of the sign at the Tippu Sultan's Palace:
Date - (1781 - 1791) This is a splendid structure now extant within the old fort, next to the Sri Venkataramana temple. It was of two storeys with a large open courtyard in front, originally with a fountain. Small ornamental gardens with the choicest of eastern and western blossoms adorned either side. The stately fluted wooden pillars on the front and rear are connected by cusped arches and brackets in Indo-Islamic style.

The walls and wooden ceilings of the entire palace are painted in floral motifs on madder red surfaces, in muted warm colors, gilded in great detail and beauty.
The eastern and western projecting balconies of the upper floor contained the seat
of state where the Sultan conducted affairs of the state. The Zanana chambers on the sides had lower ceilings but were richly ornamented. An inscription in the
palace describes it as an "abode of happiness" and "envy of heaven."
